Friday Five: Portland’s Lesser Known Sports

Portland Sports: Underwater Hockey

Underwater Hockey

Portland Sports: Underwater HockeySure, anyone can slap a puck around on the ice. How about holding your breath and moving it across the bottom of a pool? With a boomerang-sized stick? And flippers?

As the Portland Tribune wrote last summer: “Underwater hockey sounds like a quirky, made-up sport straight out of “Portlandia.” Not so. Underwater hockey is a worldwide phenomenon, and it’s one of the most physically challenging games you’ll ever play.”

Started by Jorge Filevich last summer, the UWH Club welcomes anyone with a desire to learn. Through mostly Craigslist and Meetup.com he’s been recruiting new players ever since

Your first session is free but remaining bouts are just $10. Checkout their Meetup Page for more info.

And he owns the Donahue Media Group, a local web design and project management company, as well as a real estate marketing firm, Portland Picture. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he grew up a Mariner fan before launching his own Little League coaching career.
