Friday Five: Portland’s Lesser Known Sports

Portland Sports: Underwater Hockey

Wiffle Ball

Portland Sports: Wiffle BallLiterally every kid on earth has played this game in some form or another. Whether you used a broom handle and wadded up newspaper or the classic yellow bat and hole-riddled ball, Wiffle ball is a staple of our youth.

So it only makes sense that Portland has a full adult league surrounding the game: The Columbia Cowlitz Wiffleball Association.

The CCWA spans from Longview, WA, down to Portland, with teams from all around. Opening Day was early April and the season will run through late July, culminating with an All-Star Game and playoffs.

These guys take the sport seriously: From weekly power rankings, the “Triple Crown Watch” on their website (tracking players who lead the league in Batting Average, Homeruns and RBI) to career stats dating back to 2006 for players. They even shell out awards at the end of the season for MVP, Rookie of the Year, Most Improved and more.

Check out their website for more.
