Portland Timbers’ Caleb Porter Named MLS Coach of the Year
Major League Soccer today announced Caleb Porter as the 2013 Coach of the Year.
In his first MLS season as a professional coach, Porter led the Timbers to a 14-5-15 record and the number one seed in the Western Conference. The club’s five losses tied the MLS record for fewest losses in a 34-game regular season. Porter guided the Timbers to a 15-game unbeaten streak this season – the longest by a first-year head coach in MLS – and 23-point turnaround from the 2012 season
Among first-year MLS coaches all-time, Porter ranks first in shutouts (15), second in points (57) and fourth in winning percentage (.632). Under Porter’s guidance, the Timbers registered an MLS-record, 43-goal turnaround in goal differential compared to the 2012 season while posting a season-high, plus-21 goal differential in 2013
The award was voted on by media, MLS players and MLS club management based on regular season performance. The other two finalists were New York Red Bulls’ Mike Petke and Real Salt Lake’s Jason Kreis. Below is a breakdown of the voting for the top four candidates:
