Hawks Beat Tri-City 5-2 in Preseason Saturday

2-0

Oliver Bjorkstrand had two goals as the Portland Winterhawks defeated the Tri-City Americans 5-2 on Saturday in preseason action from Everett, WA.

Justin Gutierrez started things off for the Americans, making it 1-0 at the 6:11 mark of the first period. Bjorkstrand evened the score at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal at the 12:35 mark, and Paul Bittner gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead with a power play goal at 15:28 to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage heading into the second period.

Evan Weinger extended Portland’s lead to 3-1 at the 4:33 mark of the second with an unassisted goal, followed by Bjorkstrand scoring his second of the game at the 12:08 mark to extend Portland’s lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes.

Lucas Nickles got the Americans within two at the 16:30 mark of the third period, but that was as close as Tri-Cities would get, as Ethan Price scored a shorthanded empty net goal to make it 5-2, which would remain as the final.

Adin Hill made his first start of the preseason between the pipes for the Hawks, and stopped 31 of 33 shots. Tri-Cities Americans netminder Evan Sarthou allowed four goals on 34 Portland shots.

The Hawks were 2-8 on the power play and a perfect 8-8 on the penalty kill.

Portland’s back in action tomorrow evening when they take on the tournament host Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m.
