Get Up! Get Active! 3 Events and Activities for the First Weekend of October
Another beautiful weekend is in store for Oregonians as October sets in, and with it come many adventurous activities around the Portland area. Outdoors enthusiasts will be gathering en masse this Sunday for the highly anticipated Portland Marathon, an event worth attending for racers and spectators alike. Saturday too, however, promises plenty of fun and entertaining open-air activities around Portland. Take a look at this weekend’s top three outdoor events and activities below, so you can put together the perfect plan for soaking up the sunshine and staying active this weekend.
Tamanawas Falls Fall Foliage Hike
When: Oct. 4, 8:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.
Where: Mount Hood National Forest
Experience the forest’s fall transformation, take in the crisp autumnal air and see stunning scenery on this easy three-to-five-mile hike hosted by Oregon Wild. The journey will take you through the beautiful old growth of Mount Hood National Forest along Cold Spring Creek before reaching the breathtaking Tamanawas Falls, located on the eastern side of Mt. Hood. The guided trip aims to expose adventurists to new areas of Oregon while also providing information on the region’s vegetation and wildlife. Portland Marathon Kids’ Fun Run & Fitness Festival
When: Oct. 4, 9 a.m.–noon
Where: Lincoln High School outdoor field
As part of the 2014 Portland Marathon’s weekend events, this fun festival for children ages two–12 promises excitement and entertainment for the family. There are four main events: the half-mile Walk Run Wheel for disabled children and their supporters, the quarter-mile Toddler Dash with engaging and enjoyable obstacles along the route, the half-mile Kid’s Fun Run and obstacle course for those ages five to eight, and the mile-long Mini Marathoner Run for children nine to 12. Along with these scheduled events, there will be entertainment from local team mascots, free snacks and drinks, face painting, rides, prizes and fun fitness activities. Event registration should be completed online and is $19.50, which includes a T-shirt and entry for one child and one guardian. Additional wristbands are $2.
Fall Colors Paddle
When: Oct. 4, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Where: Browns Ferry Park, Tualatin
The Tualatin River is one of the safest, prettiest and most popular recreational rivers in the Portland area. It attracts more than 1,000 locals and visitors each year, and it’s great for serious water sports and family fun alike. The Fall Colors Paddle, hosted by Tualatin Riverkeepers, offers an opportunity for participants of any level to see the gorgeous riverside and striking fall colors on an easy three-hour escapade. While all of the Riverkeepers’ kayaks have already been rented out for this year’s paddle, participants can still register for $10 and bring their own canoe or kayak for some fun in the sun this Saturday.
