Bridgetown Classic: Champions & Brackets

The first annual Bridgetown Classic is in the books. With much more fan support than we originally anticipated, the day was indeed a success!

There were players from all over the Northwest who covered the age spectrum from 4th grade to 50 years old. While the men’s open division held the most teams (12), the youth and high school teams outnumbered all adult teams.

And the fans! At one point we counted nearly 350 people on site – much higher than we could have predicted. Who needs music blasting when you’ve got fans cheering and players chirping? It was an awesome sight to see the past few months of planning come to fruition.

Our favorite moment came from the 5th/6th Grade Boys Division. We didn’t have enough teams to fill the 5th/6th Girls bracket, so the Crazy Hawks ended up being the only female team to play in a male bracket in the entire tournament. While their parents were a little worried at first, the Crazy Hawks went out and beat three male teams to advance to the Championship! Even though a very talented Team Concept won the division, it’s the Crazy Hawks who win the 2013 Bridgetown Classic Spirit Award.

Alas, not everything ran perfectly. We learned that our court monitors aren’t as important as actual referees, since calling your own fouls can be abused by teams or overzealous parents. That’s definitely something we’ll be focusing on next year. Also, trying to cram 25-minute games into 30-minute timeslots was probably not the most efficient thing to do. So, again, next year we’ll likely expand to 45-minute time slots to allow ample time for every game without causing delays.

We’ve already started planning on how to make next year’s event bigger and better! If you have any comments or criticism, please send them to info@portlandsports.com so that we can make this tournament as awesome as it should be!

2013 Bridgetown Classic – By the Numbers:

92  Games
41  Teams
7  Divisions
159  Players

We thank everyone who came out to play in this year’s inaugural Bridgetown Classic 3-on-3 Tournament. It was amazing to see so many people enjoying the fine sport of basketball on a gorgeous August day. Thanks to our amazing volunteers who helped make sure things ran as smoothly as possible, most notably Holly Donahue at the concession stand and check-in booth, Creative 35 members Marcus Harvey and Mack Olsen who managed games and scoreboards for 12 straight hours, as well as the volunteers from Portland Police Bureau’s Sunshine Division.
