stagsWhy you should root for them

Aside from the fact that it’s essentially Major League Frisbee (easily the greatest league your 18-year-old self could have imagined), the Portland Stags are quintessentially Portland. There’s even a rivalry with Seattle.

The league continually strives to fight the stigmas of hippies and dog toys, but the fact remains that this is still ultimate frisbee: one of those games that everybody played in high school or college. Whether before track practice or between classes, the only piece of equipment you needed was a disc. Remember the diving catches? Miracle throws? Spectacular blocks?

Imagine getting paid. Sure, their paychecks are miniscule compared to other professional teams ($25 per game) and they run even more than soccer players. But these guys are out there for the sheer joy and competition of the sport.

There aren’t too many sports these days where you can see that.
