Keys to Exciting Super Bowl: Lots and Lots of Bets

super bowl

You’ve seen all the crazy prop bets for the Super Bowl by now. You can literally bet on everything surrounding the big game — from the temperature at kickoff to what color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach.

National Anthem? You can bet on how long it takes Renee Fleming to sing it, what color her gloves will be or if Knowshon Moreno cries.

Will Richard Sherman make an interception? How many times will Peyton Manning say “Omaha”? Will the announcers refer to Russell Wilson being drafted in the MLB? With all these awesome bets available — and most important: easily trackable online — it’s only a matter of time until they become as popular as March Madness.

For me, they already have.

My buddy Jeff and I already bet on everything. Whether it’s Ducks football or weekly NFL spreads, we’re constantly buying each steak dinners as payment.

Last year, we were going to do the classic Super Bowl square. Just before gametime, we started joking about all the prop bets. But as we started laughing, we quickly locked eyes and realized this was no laughing matter. I bolted to my laptop, printed off 22 sheets from SportsBook.com and paused the DVR for a couple minutes.

Furiously, we scribbled through all 10 sheets before the game in alternating fashion. It took longer than we thought, and it’s hard to fast-forward through the Super Bowl when you want to watch both the game AND the commercials. All told, it was the second quarter before were LIVE again.

It was so worth it.

But this year I decided to prepare all the bets ahead of time.

I’m heading over to his house a few hours before the game, giving us plenty of time to work on bets. Last year, we put $1 on each prop. This year, it’s a point system. Each bet is worth one point and the winner gets a monster steak dinner before our annual hunting trip in Idaho.

We’ve got 95 prop bets from to SportsBook.com and Bovada.lv. We’ll come up with five of our own before the game to make it an even 100.

Click here to download a PDF of my sheets. I’ve also listed all the bets below. It will make the entire game so much more fun.

Reading the Money Line

Listed before each bet is the moneyline. It’s Vegas’ way of showing who’s the favorite and who’s the underdog. We’ll look at an example to help you understand how they work:

Will either team score in the first 6 minutes of the game?
+105 Yes
-125 No

The “-125” for No means that you would have to bet $125 to win $100. The “+105” listed before Yes, however, means that you would have to bet $100 to win $105. So in this instance, the odds-makers are saying that No is the favorite. In general, if you see a negative sign before a bet that makes it the favorite.

But with prop bets, you’ll often times see two negative signs. Sometimes you’ll see the term “even” before a bet, which means that you’d have to bet $100 to win $100.

Now that you know how to read each prop bet, it’s time to take a look at 95 prop bets for Super Bowl XLVIII.
