The Portland Winterhawks are known for their passionate fanbase, and the organization will reach a significant milestone at Sunday’s game when the team welcomes its eight millionth fan.

Prior to Sunday’s Burgerville Daylight Game at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the Hawks will keep track as fans enter the building, and then celebrate the arrival of the eight millionth fan. With a 3:30 game time, doors at the Coliseum will open at 2:30.

The lucky fan will win a number of exciting prizes, including tickets to this year’s playoff run, season tickets to the 2014-15 season, a team jersey, and a spot in the January 24 Dash For Cash promotion.

“We’re lucky to enjoy one of the best fanbases in all of hockey, and to reach eight million is a great tribute to the passion hockey fans have shown for this franchise since it arrived in 1976,” said Portland Winterhawks President Doug Piper. “We’re looking forward to honoring the lucky person who will walk into the Coliseum and become our eight millionth fan.”

The Hawks’ average attendance this season has been 7,105, the second highest figure in the league. It’s also an increase of 568 fans per game from last season, the highest increase of any team in the WHL this season.

The average attendance of 7,105 is almost double what it was in 2008-09, when the team averaged 3,648 per game. The Hawks are on pace for their highest attendance since 2000-01, when the figure was 7,116.
