Vancouver took a 2-0 lead in the first on goals by Joel Hamilton and Tyler Benson, but the Hawks got one back with a power play goal at the 13:58 mark when Keegan Iverson tipped a Keoni Texeira point shot past goaltender Payton Lee to cut it to 2-1.

The Hawks tied it with just under a minute to go in the period when Colton Veloso pounced on a rebound and flipped a backhand past Lee for his first career WHL goal and a 2-2 tie going into the second.

Portland took a lead 1:35 into the second when Chase De Leo, in his first game of the season after returning from the Winnipeg Jets’ training camp, scored to make it 3-2. It remained a one-goal lead until 36 seconds remained in the period when Vancouver’s Carter Popoff scored to tie the game at 3-3 going into the third.

Early in the third, Vancouver’s Vladimir Bobylev scored to give the home team a 4-3 advantage, followed midway through the frame by a goal from Dalton Sward as the home team went ahead 5-3, which stood as the final.

Adin Hill made 43 saves in net for the Hawks, while Portland was 1-3 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.

De Leo, Iverson, Anton Cederholm and Dominic Turgeon each made their 2014-15 debut after returning from NHL training camps this week. Oliver Bjorkstrand (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Nic Petan (Winnipeg Jets) remain at camps.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow when they host the Everett Silvertips at 7 p.m. at the Moda Center.
