The Portland Winterhawks continued their preseason schedule Friday with a 5-3 victory over the Kootenay Ice in a game played in Kennewick, WA. The win improved the Hawks’ preseason record to 4-0.

Kootenay registered the lone goal of the first period when Luke Philp scored 3:04 into the game to give the Ice a 1-0 lead they took into the second period.

The Hawks fought back in the second with three goals, beginning with a power play tally from Dominic Turgeon 8:49 into the period. Turgeon struck again at the 15:43 mark with his second goal of the period to make it 2-1. Portland padded the lead at the 18:17 mark when Paul Bittner scored to give the Hawks a 3-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

Portland extended their lead at the 13:45 mark of the third when Keegan Iverson notched his first goal of the preseason to make it 4-1. The Ice came right back, with Philp and Jaedon Descheneau scoring 30 seconds apart to cut their deficit to just one, at 4-3.

That was as close as Kootenay would get though, as Oliver Bjorkstrand scored a late empty net goal to seal a 5-3 Portland win.

In addition to Turgeon’s two goals, Alex Schoenborn and Chase De Leo each finished with a pair of assists, while Bjorkstrand had two points with a goal and an assist.

Brendan Burke earned the win in net with 16 saves on 19 shots. Keelan Williams took the loss for the Ice, allowing four goals on 32 Portland shots, with an empty netter while he was on the bench for an extra attacker.

Portland was 1-3 on the power play and a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill.

The Hawks conclude their preseason schedule tomorrow at 3 p.m. in Kennewick against the Red Deer Rebels. They open the 2014-15 regular season on Friday, September 19 against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Moda Center.
