With some sunshine in the forecast, the upcoming holiday weekend is the perfect time to soak up the season’s fun and funky fitness festivities in Portland. Saturday’s events are ideal if you’re interested in running for a righteous cause, building camaraderie on a bike ride or exhibiting your expertise at rock climbing.

For those ready to rally for the Oregon Ducks or battle for the Oregon State Beavers, Sunday’s Rivalry Clash is the right race for you. No matter what way you want to work out, this weekend’s crowded calendar offers plenty of excitement, entertainment and exercise opportunities, so everyone has an excuse to expel some energy and enjoy its exhilarating events!

Veteran’s Day 5K Run/Walk

When: Saturday, 8 a.m.
Where: Camp Withycombe (Clackamas)

The first annual Veteran’s Day 5K race will be held this Saturday morning at the Oregon National Guard’s Camp Withycombe in Clackamas. This walk/run honors past and present veterans while benefitting the renovation of the Oregon Military Museum located within the camp. Participants can expect an exciting and entertaining exercise excursion, as the race route winds through an active military camp full of essential equipment, active-duty aircrafts and uniformed personnel. Registration is open online through Thursday for $35 as well as at the event from 8–9:30 a.m. Festivities kick off at 9:50 with a welcoming ceremony before racers hit the route at 10 a.m. Along with the 5K event, there will be a free Kids’ Fun Run and a post-race awards ceremony featuring live music and entertainment.

Western Bikeworks Shop Ride

When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Where: Western Bikeworks (NW PDX)

Once a month, Nob Hill neighborhood cycling shop Western Bikeworks hosts a fun, free, casual community bike ride. These rides are open to cyclists of any skill level who are interested in taking a pleasant pedal through Portland’s popular parks and paths with some fellow cycling fans. This month’s ride will set out Saturday around 10 a.m. from the bike shop, which is located on Northwest 17th Avenue near Lovejoy Street. Weather permitting, the guided expedition will follow a charming course over 30 miles of hilly, scenic streets and trails. In the case of rain, the route will be adjusted for a shorter, flatter ride. Anyone is welcome to join in on this fun-filled fitness journey, though helmets are mandatory for all participants.

Portland Alpine Festival Ice Comp

When: Saturday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.
Where: Portland Rock Gym (NE PDX)

The 2014 Portland Alpine Festival, which celebrates climbing and mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest, culminates this Saturday after a week of clinics, movies and presentations. The festival’s final day is host to the ninth annual Portland Ice Comp, a renowned, riveting rock-climbing competition at the popular Portland Rock Gym. This event features top alpine athletes along with local legends, courageous newcomers, casual competitors and climbing connoisseurs. Registration fees, which benefit the Friends of Hyalite Canyon, cost $30 for prospective participants, though spectators can soak up the day’s exciting events free of charge. Along with captivating and challenging competition, there will be demo gear and raffle prizes throughout the day.

Duck vs Beaver Rivalry Clash

When: Sunday, 8:30 a.m.–noon
Where: Portland International Raceway (North PDX)

The Duck vs Beaver Rivalry Clash 5K and 10K race event is equal parts silly and serious, making it profoundly popular amongst Portlanders. At the start of each race, participants post up face-to-face at dual distinguished starting lines—one for University of Oregon Ducks devotees, the other for steadfast supporters of the Oregon State University Beavers. Once the battle for the best team begins, fervent and faithful fans will race against the clock, chaotically clashing with their rough-and-tumble rivals along the way. The 10K run ($45) is slated to start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run/walk ($40) at 9. Registration fees benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. From 9 a.m.–noon, participants and spectators can enjoy a post-race party featuring food, a beer garden, drinking games, vendors, giveaways and music from live DJs.
