Weekend Recap: Monday Morning Links

What a weekend for Portlanders who hate Seattle.

The Timbers beat the Sounders at home last night while the Ducks traveled to the Emerald City on Saturday to give the Huskies their first loss in their newly renovated stadium.

Surely you can set aside some of that Seattle animosity to at least enjoy the Seahawks’ victory yesterday. Here’s a recap of what went down for our teams over the weekend:

  • The Timbers came into Sunday’s game knowing the Sounders would put up a fight. Little did they know the game almost devolved into a fight. [Stumptown Footy]
  • ESPN put it best: “The last time Washington beat Oregon, nobody had an iPhone.” The trend continued Saturday. With ESPN College Gameday on hand (and some awesome signs, to say the least), the Ducks steamrolled the Huskies for the 10th year in a row. [OregonLive]
  • The Beavers looked more like a team from Eugene than Corvallis in their 52-24 destruction of Washington State. Sean Mannion, the nation’s leading passer, threw for a school-record 493 yards and four touchdowns while Brandin Cooks, the nation’s top receiver, scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns in the 52-24 rout. • Portland State held the Southern Utah to 183 yards of offense but a pair of Viking turnovers led directly to both SUU touchdowns. Meanwhile, a Viking offense that has been a powerhouse all year, had its lowest output of the season, totaling 313 yards and only one score. [GoViks]
  • The Winterhawks (4-3-0-1) scored five second period goals en route to a 7-4 win over the Kamloops Blazers (2-7-0-0) Saturday at the Moda Center. [Winterhawks]
  • Joining the Timbers and Thorns, the Blazers on Saturday announced their support of the Freedom to Marry and Religious Protection ballot initiative: “We do so as believers in individual choice as a fundamental right of all people,” said Michael Lewellen, VP for communications. [Portland Mercury]
  • Portland’s newest professional team just signed a hometown hero, as the yet-to-be-named Arena Football team signed former Ducks QB Darron Thomas. [AFL]
