Portland’s Problem: Memorial Coliseum

John Canzano finally hit the nail right on the head in his latest column for OregonLive: It’s time to get rid of Memorial Coliseum:

Nobody will ever regularly attend anything other than, maybe, a Winterhawks game in that building unless its converted into something more practical. This is the same venue that once sold out 809 straight Blazers games. And even as the building has important historical value, that value isn’t lost if its turned into a baseball stadium or another venue that serves the city.

The building is obviously outdated. The Blazers once squashed any possibility of bringing a minor league team into that location, even when former Mayor Sam Adams proposed a demolition plan to put in a baseball stadium.

Canzano goes on to say that he hopes we “someday soon come to our senses when it comes to a piece of real estate that could mean so much more to Portland if it were converted into a more useful venue, keeping the black granite walls etched with the names of those who gave their lives for our nation.”
