Phil Knight, Paul Allen near top of Forbes 400

KNIGHT

Forbes recently released their list of the 400 richest Americans, and at the top of the list are two significant contributors to Oregon sports.

No. 24 is Oregon Ducks Booster and Nike Chairman Phil Knight at an estimated 16.3 Billion. Knight is easily the richest booster in the country, and it is almost surprising that he does not own a professional sports team. I suspect he has never entered that realm because it may negatively affect Nike, but his passion for sports can be seen by watching University of Oregon sports, or even just walking through the campus, and seeing what his massive donations have produced.

Coming in at No. 26, a measly half-billion behind Knight and the richest owner in all of sports, is Paul Allen. He owns both the Portland Trailblazers and Seattle Seahawks. While Allen’s passion for basketball has always been obvious, the Seahawks have enjoyed much success the past few years. Like the University of Oregon, both teams are at the top of their sport in innovation, and it can be seen when attending their games.

The Northwest is known for their passion in sports, as evidenced by the Seahawks and their (now record-setting) loudest crowd in the NFL. Not to mention the Blazers having one of the biggest home court advantages in the NBA. Autzen stadium may be the most intimidating place in college football with less than 60,000 people and the Timbers-Sounders rivalry being one of the best in the country – across all sports.

With all this passion for sports, we should feel lucky to have the two richest sports contributors in the Country.
