A Peek at Portland’s Spookiest and Sportiest Weekend Halloween Happenings

The end of October is quickly approaching, and costumes, candy and pumpkins are on everyone’s mind. This weekend, people across Portland will be frantically and festively preparing for the upcoming holiday, crowding the city’s candy aisles, costume shops and pumpkin patches. These regular Halloween routines aren’t the only options to occupy your weekend, however.

This Saturday and Sunday are host to several spooktacular Halloween happenings that promise fearsome fun for everyone. If you’re interested in spicing up your seasonal celebrations while enjoying some exercise, head to some of the weekend’s hair-raising races and eerie events, where you’re guaranteed to have a happy Halloween!

Halloweenathon Races

When: Saturday
Where: Meriwether National Golf Course

The third annual Uberthon Halloweenathon race event will get underway this Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Meriwether National Golf Course in Hillsboro. The Halloween-themed exercise extravaganza includes the Run for Your Bones 5K, 10K and 15K races, a 15K three-person-team marathon and a Casper Dash for children. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to dress up in crazy costumes and join in the spooky Saturday morning festivities, which range in price depending on the course chosen. Children of any age can participate in the Casper Dash free of charge. The Halloweenathon kicks off at 9 a.m., with the Casper Dash following at 11:15. Those who make it to the finish line can expect to find seasonal food and delicious drinks, including Uberthon’s nacho bar. Registration remains open until the spots are full, so sign up soon to guarantee your place in the race.

Pumpkin Fun Run/Walk

When: Saturday
Where: North Plains

North Plains, which sits 15 miles west of Portland on the US-26, is set to host the second annual 5K and 10K Pumpkin Fun Run this Saturday. The event, which costs $40 for participants of all ages, begins and ends in Jessie Mays Community Park. This year’s registration fees will benefit the North Plains Elementary Parent Teacher Organization. The 10K walkers and runners will hit the course, which follows along the appropriately named Pumpkin Ridge Road, at 9 a.m. Those walking or running the 5K race will follow at 9:15, taking a route through the town of North Plains. Preregistration for the event is closed, but day-of registration is available before the races from 8–8:30 a.m.

Run Like Hell!

When: Sunday
Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square

Run Like Hell! is one of Portland’s favorite fun fall traditions. The entertaining and eerie event is in its 10th year, and this year’s theme is “Under the Sea.” Run Like Hell! features a 5K and 10K run/walk, a half-marathon run with a 15-minute/mile limit and a kid’s half miler. Races set off from downtown Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. Participants are encouraged to arrive decked out in full Halloween costume attire, making the race as entertaining for spectators as it is for those running. Racers will each receive two Lagunitas beers and catered food at the post-race party, which features live music and entertainment. Local bands and musicians will also be stationed throughout the course, including a 12-block stretch full of 12 diverse bands called “The Musical Mile.” Registration is $8 for the 8:30 a.m. kid’s race, $44 for the 9 a.m. 5K, $54 for the 8:20 a.m. 10K and $99 for the 7:45 a.m. half marathon. Spots are still available on a first-come, first-served basis through race day beginning at 7 a.m.
