Arena Football Power Rankings: Week 1

Arena Football League Power Rankings

It wasn’t pretty in Portland Monday night.

Unfortunately for the Thunder, their 64-34 blowout loss to the Sabercats in Portland’s first game of their inaugural season propelled San Jose to the top of the rankings — whilst knocking themselves to the very bottom.

Check out the remaining Arena Football League teams in this year’s first Weekly AFL Power Rankings: Week 1.

Each week we’ll rank all 14 Arena Football League teams against each other. Using their record, strength of schedule, points scored and points allowed, we’ve come up with the perfect formula to pit these teams against each other.

#,Team,Record,PF,PA,Notes

1,San Jose Sabercats,1-0,64,34,”A massive dismantling of the league’s newest team earned the Sabercats a top spot in Week 1.”

2,Spokane Shock,1-0,64,35,”The Shock opened up slow but they warmed up as they annihilated Iowa in front of a sellout crowd.”

3,Cleveland Gladiators,1-0,63,53,”Down 17 at one point, the Gladiators came back strong on the heels of QB Chris Dieker’s 251 yards and 9 TDs.”

4,Arizona Rattlers,1-0,62,55,”In a rematch of the 2013 AFL Bowl, the Rattlers topped Philly (again) thanks to Tysson Poot’s 14-yard TD strike in OT.”

5,Tampa Bay Storm,1-0,62,57,”Randy Hippeard tossed six TDs, four to Justin Hilton, in a game mostly decided by key defensive action.”

6,LA Kiss,1-0,41,38,”A game-winning FG sealed the KISS victory in their inaugural season thanks to Kenny Spencer.”

7,Orlando Predators,1-0,49,47,”The Predators outlasted Jacksonville in a close game that almost saw the Sharks send the matchup into overtime.”

8,Philadelphia Soul,0-1,55,62,”For the second time in their past two meetings, the Soul couldn’t top Arizona. At least this time the AFL Bowl wasn’t on the line.”

9,San Antonio Talons,0-1,38,41,”Though the Talons took the lead in the first half, they couldn’t hold on late as LA won in the final seconds.”

10,Jacksonville Sharks,0-1,47,49,”The Sharks were just a 2-pt conversion from overtime against Orlando, scoring a TD with 8 seconds left.”

11,New Orleans VooDoo,0-1,57,62,”The VooDoo coughed up a 42-yard fumble recovery and allowed Tampa Bay to score a net recovery touchdown.”

12,Pittsburgh Power,0-1,53,63,”At one point the Power had a 17-point lead. Unfortunately they didn’t have Cleveland’s QB.”

13,Iowa Barnstormers,0-1,35,64,”It’s never fun playing in Spokane. But it’s even worse when you only put up 35 against the Shock’s high-octane offense.”

14,Portland Thunder,0-1,34,64,”The Thunder moved the ball well early but couldn’t match the San Jose offense.”
